Career Summary

The fifth overall pick of the 2007 MLS SuperDraft by the New England Revolution, Thompson joined the Men in Red in September, bringing a wealth of championship experience. A 2010 MLS Cup winner with the Colorado Rapids, Thompson adds depth and experience to the midfield, which will be invaluable to the Fire in the 2013 season.

MLS CAREER

2011

  • Was honored at the end of the 2011 season as the Rapids Humanitarian of the Year for his continued involvement in local organizations and causes.
  • Played in a career-high 31 matches, starting 22, and contributed a career-high three goals and three assists.
  • Scored in the first minute of the match at Seattle Sounders FC (7/16), the fastest Rapids goal of the 2011 season.
  • Scored the game winning goal against New York Red Bulls on 7/20 and at Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the final match of the regular season (10/22).
  • Was one of only two Rapids players to play and start all six CONCACAF Champions League matches, playing 505 total minutes.
  • Playoffs: Played in all three 2011 playoff matches.

2010

  • Appeared in a career-high tying 27 games, with 13 starts, playing 1,287 minutes, and scored a career-high two goals.
  • Registered goal in back-to-back home matches with his second of the season vs. Philadelphia (9/29).
  • Scored first regular season goal with Rapids vs. NE (9/18).
  • Started and played 90 minutes in U.S. Open Cup qualifier at KC (4/13) and scored two goals in 2-1 victory over Wizards.

2009

  • Appeared in 25 regular season games, starting 17 and recording one goal and two assists.
  • Tied for second among all MLS players with nine cautions and served three separate one-game suspensions during the season.
  • Started at left back against LA (7/4) marking his first-ever start as a defender in an MLS match.
  • Scored the game-winning goal against San Jose (8/29), earning MLS Goal of the Week honors for Week 24. 

2008

  • Made 19 regular season appearances, including eight starts, and recorded one assist in regular season action.
  • Recorded his first-career regular season assist against Chivas USA (9/11). 

2007

  • Originally selected by the Revolution in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2007 MLS Super Draft.
  • Made 27 appearances, including 11 starts, and then started all four postseason games.
  • Made his MLS debut on opening day, starting on the left wing at Chicago (4/7).
  • Scored his first professional goal against Chicago (5/6). 

COLLEGE

  • Finished his four-year career with 16 goals, including 14 in his junior and senior seasons combined.
  • Had 10 career assists as he helped Wake Forest advance to the 2006 NCAA College Cup for the first time in school history.
  • Led Wake Forest in goals with seven, including five game-winning strikes, in 2006.
  • Earned ACC All-Tournament honors as a senior and was also an ACC All-Freshman selection in 2003.
  • Seven of his 16 career goals were game-winning strikes, including five as a senior. 

PERSONAL

  • Son of Mark and Kathryn Thompson and has an older brother, John Mark, and a younger sister, Mary Kathryn.
  • Was a political science major at Wake Forest.
  • Was at the time the highest-drafted soccer player out of Wake Forest in program history, and now is the sixth-highest drafted student-- athlete in Demon Deacon Athletics history behind basketball's Tim Duncan (No. 1 in the 1997 NBA draft) and Chris Paul (No. 4 in the 2005 NBA draft), baseball's Kyle Sleeth (No. 3 in the 2003 MLB draft), soccer’s Sam Cronin (No. 2 in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft) and soccer’s Ike Opara (No. 3 in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft).
  • Enjoys hunting and fishing in his spare time and listens to country music.
  • Has traveled to Eastern Africa during several MLS off-seasons to participate in faith-based missions in small villages.
