Andrew Boyens

Overview

Chivas USA signed Andrew Boyens on February 9, 2011, on the same day as his teammate with the New Zealand National Team, Simon Elliott. The big defender had previously spent four seasons in MLS, starting with Toronto FC in 2008, where he made 23 appearances (21 starts), scoring one goal. Joining the New York Red Bulls in 2008, the 27-year-old made 33 regular season appearances (30 starts) for the club, as well as playing two matches in the Red Bulls’ run to the MLS Cup final in 2008.

A veteran of Dunedin, New Zealand, Boyens made his debut for the New Zealand National Team in 2006 and has played 16 games for the team, and was part of the All-Whites squad at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. From 2004-2006, Boyens attended the University of New Mexico, where he was named a first team All-American in 2006.

Professional:

2009: Boyens started and played in 13 games this season. Missed five matches over the course of the season due to international duty with New Zealand, including four games in the FIFA Confederations Cup.

2008: After joining New York, he made his Red Bulls debut in a 1-1 tie against Kansas City on May 17. Played in 19 games for the Red Bulls, starting in 16. Missed match on Sept. 6 at Chicago due to international duty. Was suspended for Oct. 4 match against Toronto FC due to yellow card accumulation. Started in two playoff games but sustained broken forearm in 3-0 win over Houston on Nov. 9.

2007: Drafted in the first round (10th overall) by Toronto FC in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft. Played in 23 games, 21 of them as a starter and logged 1,825 minutes, ranking him fifth on the team. Recorded a seasonhigh three point game on June 2 vs. Colorado scoring his first MLS goal and assisting on another. Missed one game on Aug. 5 vs. Los Angeles due to the effects of a concussion.

International:
Has 12 caps for New Zealand. Made his national team debut Aug. 15, 2006 in a friendly against FC Sevilla. His first start for the national team came in a 2-2 draw with Wales on May 26, 2007. Played for the New Zealand U-23 team in 2003. Competed in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, starting against top teams including Spain and Italy.

Collegiate/Club:
Played three seasons at the University of New Mexico, and was twice named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Year (2004, 2006). Tallied 11 goals and six assists while playing for the Lobos. A three-time First Team All-MPSF
and NSCAA All-Far West Region honoree, he led New Mexico to its most successful three year run in program history. In 2004 was part of a squad that posted a 17-1-2 record, winning the MPSF title as well as a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16. One season later, Boyens was named to the NCAA College Cup All-Tournament Team after guiding the Lobos to the NCAA Championship Game with a record of 18-2-3. Helped New Mexico to a third straight MPSF title in 2006, and was named a First Team All American and a Hermann Trophy Semifinalist. Played for Dunedin Technical and was named Southern Trust National League Player of the Year in 2003.

Personal:
Andrew is the son of John and Elsie Boyens. Has two younger brothers, Michael and Richard. Majored in university studies. His favorite player is Steven Gerrard and his favorite team is Liverpool. Lists his family as among his greatest influences. Enjoys surfing. Married to wife Claire.
