He once scored the game-winning goal in a World Cup final, so with the news that German international Mario Gotze is parting ways with Borussia Dortmund this summer, his next destination is naturally at the forefront of a lot of people's minds.
Could he come to MLS? It might sound like a pipe dream, but ESPN analyst Herculez Gomez said on Friday it's at least worth a shot, given the player's talent level and the fact that he's smack-dab in the middle of his prime at 27 years old.
"Yes, you should be interested," Gomez said. "You should be pushing to sign players like this, he's well within his prime. I know he's had health issues throughout the years, some on-field, some off-field. But he's a very good player, he's a World Cup winner, he scored a World Cup [winning] goal for God's sake."
It's easy to say, of course. Making a signing that splashy a reality is quite another matter, as Gomez added later in the interview. But Gomez said that shouldn't let teams stop them from taking their shot, given the implications it could stand to have for the league.
"Certainly he can play anywhere he wants," Gomez said. "But this is a player you must go for. He's in the vein of a James Rodriguez, he would easily be one of the biggest signings in league history."
