The Los Angeles Galaxy were looking to add some depth to their roster, and two weeks ago, they did just that when they traded for Joe Franchino on April 18.
The long time New England Revolution player got off a plane in Los Angeles, and seemingly went straight from the airport to The Home Depot Center, where he played 45 minutes against the Houston Dynamo. A week later he went the distance against Chivas USA, and it looks as though he has won a permanent job in the center of the Galaxy midfield.
What's so impressive about all that is Franchino was coming off an injury and hadn't played a minute of MLS action this season until arriving in Los Angeles. Galaxy head coach Ruud Gullit hadn't even see Franchino play live.
But while the Dutchman had seen only game tape, he still had an idea of what to expect from Franchino, he was surprised by how quickly his new player assimilated into the team.
"I'm not surprised by what I saw (on the field). Of course you are surprised that he inserted himself so quickly," said Gullit. "It was difficult for him to adapt himself immediately, but I think he did quite well."
For Franchino, he just tried to handle the trade and his new environment like a true professional.
"I had no expectations, so I didn't really know what was going to happen. When you get thrown into the fire like that you just play off of adrenalin," said Franchino. "Something was said at halftime (of the Houston game), and the team came out spirited. I just tried to fit in and play simple."
Franchino has been slotted into the center of the Galaxy midfield, serving as a link between the backline and the attack. His ability with his left foot has made it easier for the Galaxy to get the ball to David Beckham wide on the right, who can then orchestrate the attack. Franchino's contributions will rarely ever show up in the boxscore, but his work hasn't gone unnoticed.
"He understands the game. He does a lot of invisible work," said Gullit. "People always want to see statistics. He closes the gaps. He does what he needs to do in midfield. That's vital for us."
What's helped Franchino's quick adjustment to his new team is the fact that he's been given a clearly defined role by his coach.
"(Gullit) sat me down and he talked to me in training," said Franchino. "We're pretty much on the same page. I know my role on the team. He explains it real well. I have a good understanding of where I'm at and where I'm supposed to be."
Franchino is a player that has a bit of a reputation for having a fiery disposion, but if that translates into bringing a bit of attitude to the Galaxy engine room, then it might just be the medicine the Galaxy need to continue their current run. There's no denying that the Galaxy has been a better side for the 135 minutes that he's been on the field so far.
