The 2016 MLS SuperDraft is officially complete, with 18 of 20 teams making at least one selection Tuesday in the third or fourth rounds.
The first two rounds of the SuperDraft were held last Thursday in Baltimore. Tuesday’s selections were made on a league conference call.
The Colorado Rapids made the most selections of any team, drafting four players, three in the third round and one in the fourth. Hudson River rivals New York Red Bulls and New York City FC were the only teams that didn’t make any selections on Tuesday.
The LA Galaxy got things started with the first pick of the third round, drafting Georgetown defender Josh Turnley with the 42nd-overall selection. Turnley was the fourth Hoya selected in the 2016 SuperDraft, joining college teammates Josh Yaro (No. 2 overall, Philadelphia), Keegan Rosenberry (No. 3 overall, Philadelphia) and Cole Seiler (No. 16 overall, Vancouver) in the pros.
The Galaxy held two other picks on Tuesday, but elected to pass on their second third-round selection, a move that precluded the team from using their fourth-round pick.
LA were one of several teams that passed on Tuesday. D.C. United and Montreal Impact also passed after making one pick, while Real Salt Lake made two selections – one in the third, another in the fourth – before passing on their second fourth-round selection.
The San Jose Earthquakes made a notable selection in the fourth-round, when they drafted Tyler Thompson – the older brother of current Quakes midfielder Tommy Thompson – 69th overall. A midfielder, Thompson and fourth-overall pick Brandon Vincent co-captained Stanford to the College Cup title last year.
Chicago, which drafted Vincent in the first round, stuck to a theme with their selections, picking Creighton defender/midfielder Vincent Keller 57th overall before drafting Butler midfielder Vincent Mitchell with the 62nd pick.
The Vancouver Whitecaps went for college cohesion with their picks, selecting a pair of University of Washington teammates in midfielders James Moberg (50th overall) and Josh Heard (71st). The ‘Caps used their final selection on St. Louis University defender Tyler David, one of three SLU players to be selected on Tuesday.
In other notable selections, 2013 US Under-20 World Cup defender Javan Torre went 56th overall to the Rapids, while former Philadelphia Union academy player and 2014 College Cup hero Darius Madison was selected 70th overall by Toronto.
