TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing
D.C. United have acquired American defender Brendan Hines-Ike on loan from Belgian side K.V. Kortrijk, the club announced Monday.
Hines-Ike, a 26-year-old center back, made 51 appearances with K.V. Kortrijk over his two seasons with the club. He began his professional career in Sweden with Örebro SK, making 71 appearances for the top-flight club before moving to Belgium.
“Brendan joins the club after making over 100 professional appearances in Europe with Örebro SK in Sweden and K.V. Kortrijk in Belgium,” D.C. United GM & VP of soccer operations Dave Kasper said in a club statement. “His defensive instincts and technical ability have been on display since he first became a professional in 2016 and we’re excited to add his experience and skillset to our backline as we continue to build our roster."
The Denver native was part of the Chivas USA academy setup before playing collegiately at Creighton and then the University of South Florida. Hines-Ike was selected by CF Montréal in the third round of the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, but signed a four-year contract with Örebro.
New D.C. United head coach Hernan Losada previously coached in Belgium's top division with Beerschot.
D.C. United's center back depth chart includes Steve Birnbaum, Frederic Brillant, Donovan Pines and Michael DeShields, who was selected fifth overall in the 2021 SuperDraft.
