LAFC have acquired forward Kwadwo “Mahala” Opoku from the Attram De Visser Soccer Academy in Ghana, the club announced Tuesday. He will join the squad pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P1 Visa.

Opoku, 19, has represented Ghana at the U-17 and U-20 level. He had 29 goals in 64 matches for the Attram De Visser Soccer Academy. The academy currently has 10 players spread across the  U-17, U-20 and U-23 Ghanaian national teams.

"We are pleased to announce Mahala as our first signing from the Attram De Visser Soccer Academy and we look forward to his continued growth as a professional,” LAFC Co-President & GM John Thorrington said in a statement. “This move and partnership with the Academy demonstrates our ongoing commitment to our player development system, and we are excited to provide young players from Ghana with the opportunity to train and develop at LAFC for years to come.”

Opoku joins an LAFC squad that is the youngest in the league, at an average age of 24 years and 198 days. He adds another option in attack for Bob Bradley as Diego Rossi and Brian Rodriguez head out on international duty.

LAFC have been without reigning Landon Donovan MLS MVP Carlos Vela for much of the season and haven't quite had the same success they had in 2019, though have 21 points after 15 matches and are four points above the playoff line.
