TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing
The LA Galaxy have signed winger Yony Gonzalez on loan from Portuguese powerhouse Benfica via Targeted Allocation Money for the remainder of the 2020 season, the club announced Wednesday.
Gonzalez, 26, will give the Galaxy another wide option as their MLS campaign resumes. He’ll occupy an international roster spot and be added to the roster pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and international transfer certificate.
“Yony is a dynamic playmaker who we believe can strengthen our attack this year,” general manager Dennis te Kloese said in a statement. “He possesses a diverse skill set and will be an important addition to our roster. We look forward to welcoming Yony to Los Angeles and his contributions to our club this year.”
Gonzalez, 26, began his professional career in 2013 with Envigado in his native Colombia. He then joined Atletico Junior in 2016, before signing with Brazilian top-flight side Fluminense in 2018. While in Brazil, Gonzalez scored nine goals and contributed one assists across all competitions.
“We are excited to add Yony to our squad and think he can be a valuable player for us,” said head coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto. “He is a player that is in the prime of his career and has a lot of technical ability on the ball. We feel that he will give our team a spark on the offensive side.”
Gonzalez signed with Benfica in January 2020, but was quickly loaned to Corinthians in Brazil for the remainder of the season. He’ll be seeking a consistent run of games for the first time since being at Fluminense.
