US men's national team midfielder Weston McKennie's potential deal to move to Hertha Berlin is off, according to German outlet Bild, though he could certainly move on from Schalke 04 during the open transfer window.
The move apparently broke down because the two club's couldn't agree on a fee, and potentially because McKennie's camp didn't believe it would be in his best interest, according to NBC Sports' translation of the report.
McKennie has previously stated his desire to play in England, and he's been linked with several Premier League sides in recent weeks. Hertha had only emerged earlier this week as a likely destination, and unlike a few of those interested clubs, had no European competition to offer in the coming season.
The former FC Dallas academy talent is coming off his most consistent season at Schalke, where he made 32 appearances in all competitions (26 starts) while contributing three goals and an assist.
With Schalke failing to reach European competition for a second consecutive season, the club is thought to be open to moving several of its more lucrative players ahead of the incoming Bundesliga campaign.
