The Bundesliga continued with Matchday 29 this weekend, and again several MLS exports and US men’s national team players featured across Germany.
Sorted by game, here’s how they all fared during the fan-less matches amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
FC Koln 2, RB Leipzig 4
Former New York Red Bulls midfielder Tyler Adams came on for the final 33 minutes of Leipzig's away win to close out the round on Monday, a result that vaulted the side back into third in the Bundesliga chase. Again Adams played right back, which is also his favored position of US national team manager Gregg Berhalter.
FC Schalke 0, Werder Bremen 1
USMNT striker Josh Sargent started and played 70 minutes in Werder Bremen’s crucial 1-0 victory as they fight to stave off relegation. He didn’t get on the scoresheet, but logged a solid shift before making way for Philipp Bargfrede. Meanwhile, USMNT midfielder and FC Dallas product Weston McKennie started and went 55 minutes before being subbed off for Nassim Boujellab. McKennie received a yellow card and was nearly sent off for another challenge.
Wolfsburg 1, Eintracht Frankfurt 2
Timothy Chandler started and played the full 90 minutes as Frankfurt upset Wolfsburg, 2-1. The outside back/midfielder last appeared for the USMNT during a FIFA World Cup qualifier back in 2016. Meanwhile, USMNT center back John Brooks completed a full shift in defeat as the gap between Wolfsburg and fifth-place side Borussia Monchengladbach further widened.
Ingolstadt 1, Bayern Munich II 2
US youth national team center back and FC Dallas product Chris Richards scored a game-winner for Bayern’s reserves in the 89th minute of a 3. Liga match against Ingolstadt. Richards rose highest at the back post to nod home in the club’s first match since early March. He now has three goals in 23 Bayern II matches this season.
Hertha Berlin 2, Augsburg 0
Former FC Dallas midfielder Carlos Gruezo logged 90 minutes as the relegation zone nears for Augsburg. The Ecuadorian previously played for VfB Stuttgart before featuring in 98matches for FCD from 2016-19.
SC Paderborn 1, Borussia Dortmund 6
Giovanni Reyna's quest for his first Bundesliga start extends to Matchday 30 as the former NYCFC academy standout came off the bench for the final 10 minutes of second-place Dortmund's decisive road victory Sunday. In his 11th substitute appearance, the 17-year-old almost immediately drew a booking from Mohamed Drager and nearly had his first league goal two minutes from full time. But Paderborn goalkeeper Leopold Zingerle got a touch on a low shot toward the far post, a deflection resulting in a corner kick.
