In his playing days Brian Mullan was an MLS staple, becoming one of just four MLS players to win MLS Cup five times in a career that spanned 14 seasons with the LA Galaxy, the San Jose Earthquakes, the Houston Dynamo and the Colorado Rapids.
Now, Mullan's post-playing career has him on the front lines helping the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic as he works as a nurse at the Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado.
The Denver Post chronicled Mullan's path in a story released on Wednesday, detailing his transition to the medical field and the steps he took in pursuit of that goal, which started near the back end of his playing career.
"He doesn't doubt himself," said former Rapids coach Pablo Mastroeni, who was interviewed for the story. "It was something he always wanted to do. And once he put his mind to it, there was no going back."
Mullan, an MLS lifer, started his playing career with the Galaxy in 2001 after playing his college soccer at Creighton, where he won his first league title in 2002. He would go on to get four more rings, bagging a second with the Quakes in 2003, back-to-back titles with the Dynamo in 2006 and 2007, before rounding it off with the 2010 title with the Rapids.
