TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Loan
The Portland Timbers have acquired Chile international forward Felipe Mora on loan from Liga MX's Pumas UNAM, the club announced Friday. The deal was completed with Targeted Allocation Money and includes an option to purchase.
Mora, 26, had 19 goals and three assists across 65 appearances with Pumas and a further 14 goals over 40 matches with Cruz Azul. He also has five appearances with the Chilean national team.
"Felipe is a player who our staff knows very well and was on the short list of DP forwards that we were scouting, so being able to bring him in on loan for the year is beneficial to both Pumas UNAM and the Timbers,” Timbers GM Gavin Wilkinson said in a club statement. “He is a proven goal scorer that gives Gio and the staff tactical flexibility and another quality attacking option.”
The move gives the Timbers three forwards, as Mora joins Jeremy Ebobisse and DP Jaroslaw Niezgoda, who officially signed with the club Thursday. Wilkinson spoke with MLSsoccer.com about wanting to have three forwards on the roster for competition and tactical flexibility.
“Felipe is an accomplished and dangerous goal scorer who has succeeded at a very high level, and we are excited to have him on the team,” head coach Giovanni Savarese said. “He has already made himself at home with us and we can clearly see his character matches his ability.”
Portland's offseason has been busy, adding the likes of Yimmi Chara and Dario Zuparic while agreeing a new contract with club legend Diego Valeri.
