Inter Miami have acquired midfielder Wil Trapp from Columbus Crew SC in exchange for $100,000 in General Allocation Money, the clubs announced Friday. Miami may send an additional $200,000 if certain incentives are hit.
“Wil is one of the most respected leaders in American soccer,” Miami sporting director Paul McDonough said in a club statement. “He has served as captain at both the club and international levels and fits the culture we are building here in South Florida. Wil is also a top-class midfielder with established success in MLS.”
“First and foremost, we want to thank Wil for his seven years of contributions on and off the field while a member of the First Team of Crew SC,” said Crew president and GM Tim Bezbatchenko. “This was certainly a difficult decision to make, but headed into the final year of Wil’s contract, we were presented with an opportunity that we felt would mutually benefit both the Club and the player.”

Tenorio adds that Miami will send $100,000 in General Allocation Money and an international spot to the Crew. Incentives could see Miami trade another $200,000 GAM to Columbus.
Trapp, who turned 27 this month, signed with the Crew as a Homegrown player ahead of the 2013 season and went on to make 185 appearances for his hometown club and be named captain.
The defensive midfielder anchored Gregg Berhalter's Crew sides in recent years and remained a key cog under Caleb Porter in 2019, but the club acquired Darlington Nagbe earlier this offseason, creating a log jam in midfield.
Trapp is set to join a Miami side in which he will likely be an integral member of the starting XI at defensive midfield. He is the latest MLS veteran to join the club, following the likes of Roman Torres, Lee Nguyen, Luis Robles, Victor Ulloa and others.
