TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing
The Montreal Impact have re-acquired attacker Orji Okwonwko on loan from Bologna FC 1909, the club announced Friday. The deal comes with a purchase option at the end of the season.
Okwonkwo, 22, enjoyed a strong first season in MLS last year in which he was named the club's MVP after contributing eight goals and two assists over 28 appearances. The winger is a member of the Nigerian U-23 side.
“Orji was one of the most efficient players on our roster last season,” sporting director Olivier Renard said in a statement. “We are very happy to see him return for another season after watching him gain MLS and youth national team experience in 2019.”
Okwonkwo 2019 highlights
Okwonkwo originally joined Bologna in 2016 and has made 27 Serie A appearances with the club, which shares an owner with the Impact.
So far this offseason, the Impact have added Romell Quioto, Joel Waterman and Ballou Tabla. The club now have 23 players under contract for 2020, including six defenders.
Montreal kick off their season under new coach Thierry Henry on February 19 against Saprissa in the Concacaf Champions League.
