The rapid rise for former New York City FC academy player Giovanni Reyna continued on Saturday when he made his senior competitive debut in Bundesliga play for Borussia Dortmund.
Fresh off the news of his permanent promotion to Dortmund's first team, Reyna entered in the 72nd minute of Dortmund's 5-3, come-from-behind victory at Augsburg.
And he even contributed to the buildup for his team's final goal as former Red Bull Salzburg striker Erling Braut Haaland completed a hat trick on his own Dortmund debut as an earlier second-half sub.
Reyna moved to Dortmund from NYCFC's academy this past summer, and had previously been named to the club's 31-player 2019-20 UEFA Champions Leauge.
After scoring eight goals while playing for the club's U19s this fall, he followed that with an invite to first-team camp during the Bundesliga winter break and subsequent first-team promotion.
Reyna is the son of former US national team great Claudio Reyna, who was NYCFC's sporting director before departing for a similar role at expansion side Austin FC.
