UPDATE (Jan. 23): Argentine reporter Agustin Sileo has followed up with a report stating Gaston Gimenez's signing with Chicago Fire FC appears to be imminent.
JAN. 16: After being linked to several players across Europe, Chicago Fire FC have been connected to a central midfielder in Argentina's Primera Division, Gaston Gimenez of Velez Sarsfield.
Argentine reporter Agustin Sileo is reporting that the Fire are interested in Gimenez, who could require a bid upwards of $8 million.
Gimenez, 28, has made 36 appearances and recorded two assists for Velez Sarsfield since joining in 2018. He’s also had stints at top-flight sides Atletico Tucuman, Godoy Cruz and Estudiantes in his home country, as well as Almirante Brown. To date, Gimenez has earned one cap with Argentina, a late cameo in a November 2018 friendly against Mexico.
Roughly six weeks out from their March 1 opener at defending MLS Cup champions Seattle Sounders, Chicago have 16 players under contract. They have three open Designated Player slots, and short time to assemble a roster with their new leadership trio of head coach Raphael Wicky, sporting director Georg Heitz and technical director Sebastian Pelzer.
