He was a key factor in Haiti’s stunning run to the semifinals of the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup and now Steeven Saba could be bound for the Montreal Impact.
According to reports from Haiti, the 26-year-old defensive midfielder, who currently plays for Port-au-Prince-based Violette AC, is close to becoming Thierry Henry’s first signing. According to Le Nouvelliste in Haiti, Saba is a passed medical away from signing with the Impact.
“Saba was training with us this morning,” Violette AC goalkeeper Steeve Sanon told the newspaper. “He took the opportunity to tell us the news.”
The defensive midfielder, who has American citizenship, has been capped 12 times by Haiti, making his debut in an international friendly against Argentina in 2018. In 2009, he was called into a US Under-18 national team camp, which featured Columbus Crew SC midfielder Wll Trapp.
Saba started all five of Haiti’s matches at the 2019 Gold Cup, scoring his lone international goal in a 2-0 victory against Nicaragua in the group stage.
Les Grenadiers finished atop its group and knocked off Canada in the quarterfinals before falling 1-0 to Mexico in extratime in the semifinals.
