TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Reports
Sporting Kansas City reportedly have their eyes on another top African talent.
The club that originally scouted and landed Ghana Player of the Year Latif Blessing, who today plies his trade at LAFC, has its eyes on one of the leading scorers of the Tunisian top-flight league according to multiple reports.
Mbenza is a 19-year-old Congolese international who made the move to Tunisian giants Stade Tunisien in December 2018, and he has six goals in 12 matches in the current season which is good for second in the league. Stade Tunisien currently occupy 3rd place in the league table.
Below is a highlight reel of some of Mbenza's scoring exploits:
It's unclear how Mbenza would fit into the picture at SKC if the acquisition materializes given the club already has a sizable forward corps and a start with USL reserve side SKC II is also a possibility (D.C. United recently signed 20-year-old Estonian striker Erik Sorga and placed him with Loudoun United).
The club made a splash with its recent record transfer acquisition of Alan Pulido, who arrives from Chivas Guadalajara. Daniel Salloi, Johnny Russell and Gerso Fernandes are also regular wingers with Erik Hurtado, Khiry Shelton and teenager Tyler Freeman projecting to come off the bench.
In addition to Shelton and Pulido, Sporting KC have made moves for ex-Chicago goalkeeper Richard Sanchez and Croatian defender Roberto Puncec. In December, the club was also linked with Red Star Belgrade striker Richmond Boakye and center back Lautaro Giannetti from Argentina's Velez Sarsfield.
