TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report
With one global star recently departed, D.C. United are reportedly looking to another star to join.
According to The Athletic's Pablo Maurer, United are targeting Real Madrid superstar Luka Modric. The midfielder's contract is set to expire at the end of the 2019-20 season.
Modric, 34, is regarded as one of the world's best central midfielders. The Croatian, who led his country to the 2018 World Cup final, joined Madrid in 2012 from Tottenham and has been a staple in the superclub's starting XI. He won the Ballon d'Or in 2018, the only winner since 2007 who wasn't Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi.
He is a four-time winner of the UEFA Champions League, as well as the Club World Cup, and has earned one La Liga title with Madrid. He started his career with Dinamo Zagreb, where he won three league titles.
United's offseason has picked up speed at an astronomical rate of late. Modric is the latest of many names to be linked with the club, while they're widely reported set to sign Peruvian international Edison Flores.
