A manager of international repute and no stranger to Concacaf appears set to be the first man in charge at Inter Miami. Just not the one some outlets originally indicated.
According to reports Friday, former CF Monterrey boss Diego Alonso will assume the reins at the expansion side, with an official announcement to unveil the Uruguayan expected Monday.
The news was first revealed on the broadcast of ESPN Deportes' Jorge Ramos y su Banda show, and later confirmed by a league source to the Miami Herald.
The hiring would conclude one of the most wide-ranging trails of speculations in league history about a managerial opening. Former New York City FC manager Patrick Vieira was among those linked to the job, as was UEFA Champions League winner Carlo Ancelotti and former Argentine and D.C. United midfielder Marcello Gallardo.
Alonso led Monterrey to the 2019 Concacaf Champions League title in impressive fashion before a poor start to this fall's Clausura season led to his firing on Sept. 30. The 2019 CCL crown was his second as manager, having also taken the trophy in 2017 at the helm of Pachuca. Additionally, he won the 2016 Clausura with Los Tuzos.
Currently a TV analyst in Uruguay, Alonso has also coached clubs in Paraguay and his native land. He was also an accomplished striker during his playing days, including stints in Spain's La Liga and four other countries.
