TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing
Columbus Crew SC have signed free agent center back Vito Wormgoor, the club announced Wednesday. He last played for SK Brann in the Norwegian first division.
Wormgoor, 31, made 30 league appearances for Brann, where he was captain and even was second on the team in goals with five, despite being a center back. He began his career at FC Utrecht before moving on to fellow Dutch clubs De Graafschap and ADO Den Haag.
“We are excited to have Vito join Columbus Crew SC,” Crew president and GM Tim Bezbatchenko said in a club statement. “Vito is a talented and seasoned veteran who has made over 300 appearances in multiple professional European leagues. We believe that his leadership will be a great asset to our team and look forward to seeing his impact on the field."
Wormgoor is a former Dutch youth international as well. He adds to the club's depth in central defense, alongside Jonathan Mensah, Aboubacar Keita and Axel Sjoberg.
The club are reportedly not done, either. According to the latest updates, Columbus are set to break their club transfer record to sign attacking midfielder Lucas Zelarayan.
