TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report
Is the former South American Player of the Year heading back to the southern hemisphere?
Don't hold your breath, but according to a report from prominent Argentine outlet TyC Sports, Pity Martinez is again a target of Gremio, a Brazilian side that apparently expressed interest during the Secondary Transfer Window in the summer.
The 26-year-old attacking midfielder signed with Atlanta United out of River Plate last January after leading the club to the Copa Libertadores title over rival Boca Juniors in 2018.
Martinez had a roller coaster first season in MLS, scoring five goals with nine assists, making 26 starts in 32 appearances while struggling to acclimate to a new league and a new coach in Frank de Boer.
In a conference call with reporters following the season, De Boer tabbed Martinez as a player who could have a breakout 2020 campaign.
“I think if he continues how he played the last two games, he has to understand, and I give him the compliment, that's the Pity I want to see,” De Boer said last month. “He’s involved in attacking and defending. If he shows that, there’s no doubt he has a major impact in MLS and for us, of course.”
