TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Reports
A year after Atlanta United swooped in to acquire Pity Martinez, River Plate's top player at the time, new reports out of Argentina claim that MLS could be calling for another of River’s standouts.
This time it’s Ignacio Fernandez, with Inter Miami and the LA Galaxy cited as possible destinations for the 29-year-old central midfielder.
AS reports that Inter seek to make “Nacho,” an all-rounder capable of incisive contributions in both attack and defense, one of their Designated Players.
Meanwhile, his time as a teammate of Guillermo Barros Schelotto at Gimnasia La Plata has fueled talk of a reunion in LA, where GBS is preparing for his second season in charge of the Galaxy. But Fernandez’s agent has stated that he’s had no contact with the SoCal side:
The AS report suggests that River and Fernandez recognize that given his age, this could be the last chance for player and club alike to cash in with a big transfer move, but that the club’s other moves in the market, or lack thereof, may influence the decision-making process.
AS also claims that River manager Marcelo Gallardo was Miami’s top target for their still-vacant head coaching post, but that the two sides could not reach an agreement, which matches up with similar reports last week on the expansion club's coaching search.
