The US U-23 national team kicked off play in the United International Football Festival in the Canary Islands on Thursday, falling 1-0 to their Brazil counterparts in the first of two games the Americans will play in the friendly tournament.
The game's lone goal came courtesy of RB Leipzig attacker Matheus Cunha, whose sharp low shot fooled Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Matt Freese in the 15th minute.
All told, 13 current MLS pros featured in the match for the US.
Thursday's loss means the US will play for third place in the tournament, against the losing side in Thursday's clash between Chile and Argentina.
The tournament is intended to be a warm-up for the USMNT ahead of Concacaf 2020 Olympics qualifying, which will take place in Guadalajara, Mexico, in March and April, when Jason Kreis' squad will attempt to return to an Olympic tournament for the first time since 2008.
