Ahead of their first match of the season on Sunday, New York Red Bulls and New York City FC supporters managed to find some common ground. On Friday, the two sides announced a new foundation that will eventually lead to a trophy being handed out.

Two New York Red Bulls supporters groups — Empire Supporters Club and the Viking Army — along with The Third Rail, a New York City supporters group announced that they have formed the Hudson River Derby Foundation. The foundation is modeled after the Independent Supporters Council's annual Supporters' Shield. It is run by volunteer supporters and plans to keep the Hudson River Derby focused on the competition between two New York teams and the supporters.

The foundation plans to grow the organization and fundraise for the competition. In 2020 the competition will be launched and a Hudson River Derby trophy will be purchased. You can get more details here.

The two sides will play their first of two games on Sunday at Red Bull Arena (6:30 pm ET | FS1 in US; TSN1, TVAS in Canada), with the second coming on August 24 at Yankee Stadium. The Red Bulls hold an edge over NYCFC all-time, winning six of 12 matchups including two draws.
