After spending much of the 2019 season with Toronto FC II, Jacob Shaffelburg has signed a Homegrown Player contract with Toronto FC, the club announced Friday.

Shaffelburg, 19, has two goals and three assists through 12 appearances with TFC II this season. The left-footed, pacy winger made his first-team debut during TFC’s Feb. 19 Concacaf Champions League match at Panamanian side CA Independiente.

“Jacob is a talented young player that has earned this opportunity,” TFC general manager Ali Curtis said. “We feel he can help improve our team both now and in the future. He’s a fierce competitor and we’re excited to add him to the first team.”

Before joining Toronto around the new year, he previously starred at the Berkshire School, a prestigious preparatory school in Western Massachusetts. Former New York City FC midfielder and 2016 SuperDraft No. 1 selection Jack Harrison famously played there.

Shaffelburg, the 2017-18 Gatorade Massachusetts Boys Soccer Player of the Year, is the ninth TFC Homegrown Player signed to a first-team deal. He’s originally from Nova Scotia and has trained extensively with the first team all spring.
