With 35 shots but no goals, Toronto FC had to settle for a frustrating 0-0 draw against visiting D.C. United on Wednesday night. The Black-and-Red even sported a rotated lineup.
TFC were without star striker Jozy Altidore, who missed the match with a new heel injury after recently recovering from a different ailment. It's no coincidence the club was held goalless, scoring just once across their last three games. Altidore has featured just 18 minutes during that stretch.
"I think we need more [firepower] – I think that’s been evident for a while now," Vanney said after the match. "That’s something we have to consider and talk about. We have to work on that."
In games that Altidore has started, TFC are 2-1-1 with 12 goals scored. In the seven in which he has started on the bench or been unavailable, the club is 3-3-1 with 10 goals scored. Altidore scored one of those goals off the bench, too.
Unfortunately for Vanney, the Primary Transfer Window just shut, and the Secondary Transfer Window won't open until July 7. He'll have to make do with his current squad for at least the next eight MLS matches.
"This was as dominating of a performance as there has been, but we don’t have the goal to show for it, which is the only frustration in that room," Vanney said. "It's that we didn’t get the goal and the three points to show for it."
As for D.C., leaving BMO Field with a point amid three matches in a week, is a result they're content with. They're briefly atop the Eastern Conference standings on 24 points, one ahead of the Philadelphia Union.
"Yeah, probably not the most entertaining game to watch, but most importantly we got the point," said Wayne Rooney, who entered the match in the 48th minute. "So, we knew this week was going to be a tough week, two tough away games. So I think the lads worked really hard and thankfully we came away with a point."
