UPDATE, April 22 1:56 pm ET: New York Red Bulls Sporting Director Denis Hamlett released a statement regarding the reports linking Thierry Henry with the club as head coach:
"Recent reports of Thierry Henry joining the New York Red Bulls are false."
April 17, 6:39 pm ET: The New York Red Bulls already have a head coach, and so it raised an eyebrow on Wednesday when an England-based reporter and Sky Sports claimed that former RBNY star Thierry Henry is in talks with the club.
However, MLSsoccer.com's Sam Stejskal poured a bit of cold water on the reports:
Henry, who scored 51 goals in 122 appearances for the Red Bulls in the twilight of a spectacular playing career than included stints at Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal and Barcelona, scored 284 career goals.
A World Cup winner with France, Henry’s managerial career has not taken off as quickly as his playing career.
After serving as an assistant with Belgium's national team, Henry took over as Monaco manager in October, but that lasted just three months. Henry was dismissed in January with a 4W-11L-5D record in his 20 games in charge.
The Red Bulls, meanwhile, have struggled out of the gates in 2019, the first full season as head coach for Chris Armas. After capturing a third Supporters’ Shield title in six years last season, the club have won just once in their first six games of the '19 season, and they carry a four-match winless streak into Saturday’s Week 8 battle (7:30 pm ET | MLS LIVE on ESPN+ in US, on DAZN in Canada) against the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium.
