The Portland Timbers have added a European goalkeeper to their roster for the 2019 season.

The club announced the signing of Aljaz Ivacic via transfer from Olimpija Ljubljana on Friday.

“We are excited to add another solid goalkeeping option to our roster,” said Giovanni Savarese, head coach of the Timbers, in a team statement. “Aljaz is a player that has a good mindset and mentality, and we look forward to helping him continue to grow and develop with our club.”

Ivacic, 25, began his career at Olimpija Ljubljana, from 2012-16 and returned there in 2017, where he's been ever since, winning a domestic double last season. He has spent his entire career in his native Slovenia, aside from a short stint in Cyprus in 2017.

The Timbers welcome back Jeff Attinella, who played the bulk of the minutes in goal in 2018, this year, but Jake Gleeson, who had been with the club since they moved to MLS, departed this offseason.

Ivacic becomes the second Slovenian to join the league this offseason, following the addition of Aljaz Struna to the Houston Dynamo.

Portland open the 2019 MLS regular season on March 2 at the Colorado Rapids.
