The Montreal Impact announced on Monday they have transferred midfielder/forward Alejandro Silva to Club Olimpia for more than C$4 million (just over US$3 million). The sale is a record fee for the Impact.

Silva, 29, returns to Olimpia for a third stint after playing the 2018 season in Montreal, where he made 31 MLS regular season appearances and scored five goals and 11 assists, after arriving as a TAM signing from Argentine outfit Lanus.

But the Uruguayan had been linked to a move closer to home, and in the end, the Impact found an agreement that seemed to work for both sides.

“I thank Alejandro for his important contribution this past season,” said Impact head coach Remi Garde in a team statement. “His daily professionalism and his desire to win greatly helped the team progress. He was very keen to take a new sporting opportunity that would also allow him to be closer to his family. I wish him a lot of success in the future.”

Silva's departure will certainly leave an opening for Montreal, but they have already acquired Maxi Urruti and Harry Novillo in the offseason. The Impact will kick off their 2019 MLS regular season campaign on March 2 against the San Jose Earthquakes.
