D.C. United and longtime coach Ben Olsen have come to terms on a contract extension through the 2021 season, reports the Washington Post's Steven Goff. The reported extension would add two years to a deal that was previously set to expire following next season.
Olsen has been in charge at D.C. since taking over on an interim basis following the departure of Curt Onalfo during the 2010 season, and has guided the Black-and-Red to the playoffs in five of his eight full seasons at the helm.
While the four-time MLS Cup winners have only made a conference final once during Olsen's tenure, they've also been one of the league's lowest-spending clubs on personnel through most of that span.
That changed this season with the club's move across town to Audi Field and its team-record signing of Wayne Rooney. With that added investment, D.C. scored 60 goals, its highest-scoring campaign since scoring 65 regular season goals en route to a third MLS Cup in 1999, but lost on penalties to Columbus Crew SC in a home Knockout Round game.
