Diego Fagundez is one of the New England Revolution’s most influential and longest-serving players, a face of the franchise and a key creative cog in midfield. But his father and agent injected a bit of extra drama into Decision Day presented by AT&T, posting a tweet that suggested that Sunday’s home match vs. the Montreal Impact could be his final game as a Rev.
Translated into English, that’s Washington Fagundez, himself a professional player during his younger days, saying, “Enjoy the game @ Diego Fagúndez that may be the last one here in this club and in this stadium with these great fans.”
Diego signed a multiyear contract extension in January of 2016 and while the Revs’ announcement at the time did not specify its length, the Boston Globe’s Frank Dell’Apa reported that it was a three-year deal with a club option for a fourth year.
On Sunday a source with knowledge of the situation told MLSsoccer.com that Fagundez has “multiple years” left on his contract.
The first Homegrown Player in New England history, Fagundez has posted eight goals and 10 assists in 32 league games (29 starts) this season. His career MLS totals are 49 goals and 42 assists in 216 regular-season games (163 starts) over his eight years as a pro. During that time he helped the Revs reach the 2014 MLS Cup final and the 2016 U.S. Open Cup final.
Fagundez – who has represented Uruguay, the country of his birth, at youth international level – is also the first Homegrown field player to log 10,000 minutes in MLS, and youngest player to record 100 appearances and 25 goals in league history.
