LA Galaxy 1, LAFC 1 | 2018 MLS Match Recap

The tables were turned in the third edition of El Trafico, as part of Heineken Rivalry Week, on Friday at StubHub Center, as the LA Galaxy took an early lead but LAFC battled back for a 1-1 draw.

In contrast to the first two games between the teams this season, filled with drama, goals and wide open play, Friday's draw was largely a defensive duel, with the two biggest stars on the field the ones to break through and score on the night.

The Galaxy took the lead in the 15th minute courtesy of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as he brought down a cross with his chest and volleyed it into the net without it hitting the ground. LAFC defender Danilo Silva attempted to clear the shot but Video Review confirmed the shot had fully crossed the line.

After struggling in the first half LAFC found a lifeline shortly after the halftime break, as Perry Kitchen tripped Carlos Vela in the Galaxy's box and Vela stepped up and converted the penalty to tie up the match.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: Given the rivalry implications, the draw will be a disappointment to both teams, but the Galaxy will probably be more upset, given their lead and need to shore up their playoff standing. That said, LAFC still haven't beaten the Galaxy and that could become a looming issue the longer the trend persists.

  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH
: Ibrahimovic's goal was not the stunner of his first goal in MLS, but a nifty bit of skill nonetheless.

  • MAN OF THE MATCH: LAFC needed a big play to get back into the game, and Vela rolled up his sleeves, drawing a penalty and scoring it to get a result for the visitors.
