Paul Arriola’s diving header was arguably the most striking moment of an absolutely wild match between D.C. United and Toronto FC, and it’s won the Week 16 AT&T Goal of the Week race in a photo finish.
Bagging 35 percent of the vote, Arriola’s spectacular effort edged out the lovely chip scored by Chicago’s Aleksandar Katai at Colorado by a mere one percentage point in the final totals, one of the closest GotW polls to date this season.
The D.C. star showed impressive body control to go horizontal in meeting Yamil Asad’s pinpoint cross and glance it into the side netting to double United’s shock early lead at BMO Field – though TFC got the last word, netting a last-gasp equalizer to salvage a 4-4 draw in a mesmerizing contest on the shores of Lake Ontario.
New England RevolutionHomegrownDiego Fagundez finished in third place (12%), followed by Seattle’s Harry Shipp (11 percent) and Fagundez’s Revs teammate Cristian Penilla (8%).
