After two very good seasons at RB Leipzig, manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has departed, and the club may bring in an American to continue the project in the Bundesliga.
That's the word from German outlet Bild, which reported on Friday that RB Leipzig sporting director Ralf Rangnick is looking for a replacement for Hasenhuttl, and among the candidates named in the report is none other than New York Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch.
RB Leipzig just completed their second season in the German top flight, finishing sixth and completing their first campaign in the UEFA Champions League. In their debut season, RB Leipzig finished second in the league behind only Bayern Munich. The East German club is part of a loose network of global Red Bull soccer clubs including RBNY, and the teams use similar youth-focused approaches in roster construction.
Marsch, 44, has been connected to European jobs in the recent past, and has been working on his UEFA coaching badges. Currently in his fourth season as the head coach of New York, he has won the 2015 Supporters' Shield with the team and was MLS Coach of the Year that same season. He also helped lead the Red Bulls to the U.S. Open Cup final in 2017.
