TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report
D.C. United have been rumored in recent months to be in the market for a big-name player, and on Tuesday a new one emerged.
Steven Goff of The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that D.C. United are in "serious talks" with English star Wayne Rooney about joining the team in the upcoming summer transfer window.
According to the report, Rooney has one year left on his current contract at Premier League side Everton, but his return to his hometown club has not gone as planned, as the team has struggled under a series of managers this season. As a result, the Liverpool native is looking at options to move on and continue his career elsewhere.
Rooney, 32, has played most of his career as a forward, first for Everton, where he made his professional debut as a 16-year-old, and then at Manchester United, where he won five Premier League titles, a Champions League crown, a Europa League title, an FA Cup and a Club World Cup. He is the all-time leading scorer at Manchester United.
Rooney was also an English international 2003-16, and is the all-time leading scorer for his country.
D.C. United currently sit in last place in the Eastern Conference, getting off to a rocky 1-4-2 start to their season. The team will be moving into a brand-new soccer specific stadium, Audi Field, on July 14, and have been linked with marquee names to bolster the roster moving forward, including Mario Balotelli.
