It was a nightmare for Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Zac MacMath, a dreamy moment for Real Salt Lake and their fans – and now an AT&T Goal of the Week champion.
Albert Rusnak’s clever free kick, the capstone for RSL’s 3-0 Rocky Mountain Cup win over their rivals to the east, has cruised to a comfortable victory in the Week 8 GOTW vote, reeling in 52 percent of votes cast.
Stepping up to a set piece just outside the Rapids’ penalty box in second-half injury time, the Slovakian playmaker sought to hoodwink MacMath – who was in goal due to Tim Howard’s first-half red card – with a bit of deception, shaping his body and looking towards his massed teammates to his left as if about to deliver a service to the far post.
But Rusnak went for goal himself instead, delicately curling a pinpoint strike around the Colorado wall and into the top corner.
The piledriver from Seattle Sounders midfielder Gustav Svensson finished in second place (24%), followed by Aleksandar Katai's golazo for the Chicago Fire (13%), Jimmy Medranda's ambitious effort for Sporting KC (8%) and LAFC defender Laurent Ciman's sweetly-struck set piece on his return to his former club the Montreal Impact (3%).
