Two of the men responsible for the Houston Dynamo's revival aren't going anywhere, as general manager Matt Jordan and head coach Wilmer Cabrera have signed contract extensions with the team, keeping them in Houston through 2020.
“Matt and Wilmer have proven to be an excellent team who can deliver results. They are fully aligned as to the vision and plan for our club’s success," said Dynamo president Chris Canetti in a team statement. “As we look to the future, we have complete confidence in their collective ability to execute that vision and plan and lead us to our goals.”
First reported by Houston's FOX affiliate on Wednesday before being confirmed by the club, Cabrera was signed to a new two-year deal with just the current deal set to run out at the end of this year.
“I am very honored and happy to continue my work with the Houston Dynamo. I appreciate the confidence and support from the ownership group, Chris Canetti and Matt Jordan,” Cabrera said. “This is a great opportunity to make this a long-term project by continuing to work hard. It is also a big responsibility for me to continue to lead the staff and the players to make this the club that all Houstonians deserve.”
Jordan signed a new three-year contract after his original three-year contract ended, and has also been promoted from vice president to senior vice president of the organization.
“I appreciate and am looking forward to the opportunity to continue moving the technical side of our club forward in positive direction working with our ownership group, Chris, Wilmer and our technical staff,” Jordan said. “We know we have a lot of hard work ahead of us as the league continues to grow and evolve, and we look forward to the challenge ahead to bring sustainable success to the Houston Dynamo.”
Jordan and Cabrera helped the Dynamo get back into the playoffs last season for the first time in four years, and advanced to the Western Conference Championship. Under Cabrera's leadership from the bench, the Dynamo scored a club-record 57 goals and lost just once at home (12-1-4).
The Dynamo are back in action on Saturday at home against the New England Revolution (8:30 pm ET | MLS LIVE; on DAZN in Canada).
