Vancouver Whitecaps FC have secured a valuable piece of their squad for the foreseeable future, announcing on Friday they have signed defender Kendall Waston to a new contract through the 2019 season, with an option for 2020.
Waston, 30, joined the Whitecaps during the 2014 season. He's made 89 MLS regular season appearances, five MLS Cup Playoffs appearances, and helped them to the Canadian Championship title in 2015. Last season, he served as team captain.
"Kendall has ascended to being one of the best center backs in the league, and we're delighted to have him during the prime of his career," said Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson in a team statement. "He's a national hero in his country, and has also delivered for his club when he's been needed most. We are excited that Kendall and his family have committed their future to this club and city."
Waston was named Whitecaps FC's Player of the Year in 2015 and 2017, and was an MLS Defender of the Year finalist in 2015 and 2017. He was also named to the MLS Best XI both of those years. He reflected on his
The Costa Rican international also aims to represent his country at the 2018 World Cup this summer in Russia. Waston has 24 caps for the Ticos to date. He reflected on his growth for club and country in an exclusive interview with Away From the Numbers.
