LAFC announced on Thursday their first-ever English play-by-play announcer on local broadcasts, ESPN anchor Max Bretos.
Bretos has officially been named the team's lead broadcaster and head of content. He'll announce LAFC games on the expansion team's YouTube TV channel, the exclusive home of English-language local broadcasts, and will also serve as host and director of original LAFC programming, including pregame and postgame shows on the LAFC YouTube TV channel.
“Max is a world class talent and a nationally known soccer expert,” LAFC president & co-owner Tom Penn said in a team statement. “He is the perfect lead broadcaster to collaborate with YouTubeTV and create first class game broadcasts and innovative complementary programming.”
Bretos will remain with ESPN, where he has served in a variety of roles, including MLS Cup coverage anchor and SportsCenter anchor, since joining the company in 2010. Prior to that, he called games regularly for Fox Soccer Channel, and was previously the announcer for LA Galaxy games. Bretos made a name for his energetic and exuberant calls of games.
“I don’t know if I can properly express how excited I am for this opportunity,” Bretos said. “Having lived in LA for 15 years, I know first-hand what the world’s game means to this city. I met my wife in LA and my son was born here – to be able to return here to create content and help voice the soundtrack for this new club is a dream come true.”
LAFC will play their first MLS regular season game on March 4 at the Seattle Sounders (5 pm ET | ESPN).
