The San Jose Earthquakes added a major new weapon to their attack on Wednesday, announcing the signing of Swedish striker Magnus Eriksson as a Designated Player, pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and international transfer certificate.
Eriksson, 27, arrives from Djurgardens IF, where he was the co-leading scorer in Sweden’s Allsvenskan in 2017 with 14 goals. His résumé also features distinguished stints at Eskilstuna, Åtvidaberg and Malmo – where he was instrumental in league championship runs in 2013 and 2014 – in his native country as well as KAA Gent in Belgium, Denmark’s Bröndby IF and Chinese side Beijing Renhe.
“With Magnus, we have identified an impact player that embodies the attitude we want to represent in San Jose and the technical qualities of a leading goalscorer in Europe,” said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli in a club release.
“His ability to play multiple roles in the attack and his work ethic defensively were major factors in our decision to pursue him. He is in great form, having led Sweden’s top league in scoring last season, and is an elite attacking player that has maintained a high level of consistency over the last five years.”
A left-footed player capable of working up top or out wide, Eriksson represented Sweden at multiple youth international levels and has one senior cap to date. He was recently called in for a camp with the full national team as they look ahead to taking part in World Cup 2018 in Russia next summer.
