Report: NYCFC eyeing former French youth international left back

They just re-signed starter Ronald Matarrita to a new contract. But New York City FC may also be in the market for promising French left back Louis Nganioni, according to a new report from Foot Mercato.

A former French youth international of Congolese descent, Nganioni is a product of Olympique Lyonnais’ prolific academy system and signed a senior contract with the Ligue 1 club in 2015.

But he’s since found limited first-team opportunities with Les Gones, leaving the club on loan stints to second-division side Brest and FC Utrecht in the Netherlands.

Nganioni, 22, also dealt with a knee injury in recent months and is hungry for playing time, telling Foot Mercato earlier this year that “I am looking for a stable project where I can play” and “I want to play the most matches possible each season,” expressing his openness to going abroad if need be.

This week's report states that his current contract with Lyon expires in June, and that in addition to NYCFC coach Patrick Vieira's interest, Greek heavyweights AEK Athens, two Swiss clubs and several French second-division sides are tracking him.
