Sometimes, a good dummy is the smartest play.
FC Dallas found that out the hard way on Sunday at Atlanta United FC, when Five Stripes forward Josef Martinez expertly stepped over a Hector Villalba cross to fool defender Walker Zimmerman and setup Greg Garza for an easy tap-in finish.
The goal, Atlanta’s third in their 3-0 win over FCD at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, was a good enough team move to run away with the MLS Goal of the Week honors for Week 27.
Garza’s goal received a whopping 70 percent of the Goal of the Week vote, 53 percentage points more than the second-place finisher, Vancouver attacker Yordy Reyna. New England’s Lee Nguyen finished third with six percent of the vote, while Colorado’s Dominique Badji and New York City FC’s Jack Harrison rounded out the field with four and three percent of the tally, respectively.
Garza now has two goals and five assists in 24 regular season appearances this year. Atlanta, who thrashed New England 7-0 on Wednesday, will return to action on Saturday against Orlando at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (4 pm ET; Univision, Facebook.com in the US | MLS LIVE in Canada). The Five Stripes are set to break the all-time MLS single-game attendance record at the match.
