Vancouver Whitecaps 1, Seattle Sounders 1 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

The defending MLS champions look poised for another Cup run, as the Seattle Sounders' unbeaten streak reached a club record 10 games with Wednesday's 1-1 draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place.

Vancouver earned a rewarding point, though, with former Sounder Fredy Montero's 64th-minute goal after the Whitecaps went to 10 men. Minutes earlier, Tony Tchani had been sent off with a second yellow.

Seattle looked poised to win on the road after Nico Lodeiro converted a 19th-minute penalty that came about when recent arrival Victor Rodriguez drew a foul on Sheanon Williams in the box.

Seattle had plenty of chances to either build or re-take the lead. Jordan Morris hit the bar with a shot in the 62nd minute, one of several opportunities. But the Sounders still remain atop the Western Conference standings at 41 points, and are unbeaten in their last five road matches. Vancouver remain above the playoff line.

Three Things

  • CASCADIA CUP-DATE: The Portland Timbers still lead the traditional three-team competition at seven points from four matches against Vancouver and/or Seattle. But the Whitecaps and Sounders earned a point each to put the Sounders in second place with five, and the Whitecaps are in third with four. Vancouver has won the Cascadia Cup three of the last four years. There are three games left in the season involving the three teams.

  • QUALITY DEBUT: Rodriguez, the veteran winger from Spain whom the Sounders signed early this month, made his debut Wednesday and made a difference. Rodriguez drew the foul in the box that set up Seattle's lone goal, and if not for a tremendous save from David Ousted, might have scored on a free kick in the 33rd minute.

  • SAVE SPECTACULAR:
The Whitecaps wouldn't have earned their point without the efforts of Ousted, who saw 25 shots and made seven saves. Sounders defender
    Chad Marshall
saw his header on target stopped in the 48th minute, and in the 55th, Ousted punched away a Lodeiro shot that was headed for the net. Lodeiro, however, had the goal celebration of the night, reprising his memorable celebration from last season:
