It was one of the most thrilling games in Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, as Toronto FC defeated the Montreal Impact in the Eastern Conference Championship to advance to the MLS Cup final.
The game finished 5-2 in extra time after the teams finished even on aggregate through 180 minutes. Benoit Cheyrou scored the series-winning goal just 92 seconds after coming on.
Here are some other stats you should know about the second leg of the Eastern Conference Championship:
Goal bonanza
After scoring a total of five goals in Leg One, Toronto and Montreal came out on the front foot in Leg Two as they added three more total goals in the first half. The game finished with seven total goals, putting the series total at 12 goals. Those 12 goals are the most in MLS Cup playoff history in a two-leg series. The six highest-scoring two-leg playoff series are as follows:
- Toronto FC-Montreal Impact (2016 Eastern Conference Championship) - 12 goals
- Columbus Crew SC-New England Revolution (2014 Eastern Conference Semifinals) - 10 goals
- LA Galaxy- San Jose Earthquakes (2003 Western Conference Semifinals) - 9 goals
- FC Dallas-Colorado Rapids (2006 Conference Semifinals); Portland Timbers-Seattle Sounders (2013 Western Conference Semifinals); Portland Timbers-FC Dallas -(2015 Western Conference Championship) - 8 goals
Jozy sets record
Jozy Altidore has been on a tear for Toronto and the US national team over the past four months and that continued on Wednesday night as the forward scored yet again. The goal was his fifth in the Audi 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs and he set a record in the process. Altidore is the first player to score in five consecutive playoff games in one postseason. Carlos Ruiz had previously scored in five consecutive playoff games but he did it over two postseasons.
Giovinco's first
Despite missing four games, Sebastian Giovinco led MLS in shots this season with 177. Given his 5-foot-4 frame it's no surprise that the Italian star does not take many shots with his head. What is surprising that Giovinco's headed shot in the 69th minute was the first one he has taken this season. It was also just his second in his two-year MLS career.
