Vancouver Whitecaps win 2016 Cascadia Cup

Vancouver Whitecaps supporters lift the Cascadia Cup while marching to CenturyLink Field

There was plenty to play for on Sunday between the Vancouver Whitecaps and Portland Timbers. A playoff spot for the Timbers, and the Cascadia Cup if they beat the Whitecaps at BC Place, while the Whitecaps could take the Cascadia Cup with a big win over the Timbers.

In the end, Vancouver prevailed, winning 4-1 in the Decision Day clash, both clinching the Cascadia Cup and preventing Portland from reaching the Audi 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs.

And that scoreline is significant for Cascadia Cup purposes, as the 'Caps and Timbers were equal on points, with Vancouver needing to overcome a five-goal swing in goal difference to go atop the Cascadia Cup standings. In the end, they did exactly what they needed to, edging Portland by one goal to take the title.

The Cascadia Cup is a regional competition established by the supporters of the Whitecaps, Timbers and Seattle Sounders. The 2016 title is the Whitecaps' sixth all-time -- best among the three teams -- and third in four seasons.
