The 2016 USL Cup will be contested between a pair of teams owned by MLS clubs, with New York Red Bulls II set to host Swope Park Rangers, who are operated by Sporting Kansas City, in the league championship on Sunday.
The USL regular season champions, Red Bulls II advanced to the final after beating Louisville City FC 4-3 in a penalty-kick shootout following a 1-1 draw through regulation and extra time at Red Bull Arena on Sunday. New York goalkeeper Ryan Meara was the hero, making a pair of stops in the shootout as Red Bulls II won in penalty kicks for the second straight game.
Swope Park Rangers advanced to the final in their inaugural season as a team, winning 3-0 against another MLS-owned side, Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2, in the Western Conference Final on Saturday. Former Chivas USA forward Kris Tyrpak had two goals for the Rangers, who finished fourth in the West in the regular season.
Sunday’s final will kick off at 8 pm ET at Red Bull Arena and will be broadcast live on ESPNU and WatchESPN.
