DC United stadium rendering - 9/15/16

D.C. United shared an updated look at their new stadium on Thursday, when the club released new renderings of their future home for the first time since January.

The stadium, tentatively named D.C. United Stadium, is scheduled to open in 2018 in Southwest D.C.

In addition to releasing updated renderings, D.C. announced several external features that will shape the fan experience at the stadium.

The most noteworthy revelation was that a 65,000 square foot public plaza will be built just outside the stadium’s main gate. Located at the intersection of Potomac Ave. and Half St., the area will serve as a “game day festival plaza” and queuing area for the main gate. The club announced that they plan on hosting food and beverage vendors, live music acts, a broadcast set, merchandise booths and sponsor activation areas in the plaza, which will also include a D.C. United-themed sculpture and a splash fountain that will run only on non-game days.

The club also announced that 1st St., which has been realigned as a private two-way road along the east side of the stadium, will be open to the public once the stadium is complete. The road will be closed on match days.

Additionally, United announced that the stadium will feature parklets on the sidewalk along the east side of 2nd St., adjacent to the stadium. According to the club, the parklets will include seating areas and bike parking.
