While a number of USMNT stars return to Premier League play this season – and American goalkeepers continue to dominate – one more national teamer made his EPL debut on Saturday morning. California native Lynden Gooch started on the left midfield for Sunderland AFC in their season-opening match at Manchester City.
Gooch, 20 years old, previously made four appearances with the US U-20s in 2015 during the CONCACAF Championship, and has been tipped as a senior-team prospect. In his club career, he joined Sunderland’s senior team that same year, after several years in their academy and reserves.
So how did he manage? Gooch impressed with his work rate, and one (blocked) free kick, over 64 minutes, before being subbed off for Wahbi Khazri.
Sunderland, meanwhile, fell 2-1 to the home team.
