New York City FC have moved to the top of the Eastern Conference standings, thanks in large part to the way they have played away from Yankee Stadium in 2016.
NYCFC got another win on the road on Sunday, defeating the Montreal Impact 3-1 on the back of goals from David Villa, Jack Harrison and Frank Lampard.
The win was their sixth on the road this season, two more than any other team so far this season. The win gave them their 19th point on the road after 10 games. With seven games left, Patrick Vieira’s team has a chance to put itself among the great road teams in MLS history.
Since MLS did away with the shootout, no team has been able to win more than nine games away from home in a season. Three of the four teams that hit nine wins won the Supporters’ Shield (2005 Earthquakes, 2010 Galaxy, 2012 Earthquakes).
Only one team since 2001 has been able to accrue at least two points per game on the road. That would be the 2010 Galaxy team that featured David Beckham, Landon Donovan, Omar Gonzalez and Edson Buddle.
In order for NYCFC to reach that two points per game mark, they would need to earn at least 15 points in their last seven games. They will begin that attempt against their rivals, the New York Red Bulls, on Sunday (1 pm ET; FOX). The rest of their road schedule is favorable, with only two of the seven teams currently sitting above the red line.
